Big Bend Movie Set Comes Down

The decades-old Contrabando movie set on the grounds of the Big Bend Ranch State Park will soon be a memory.

Park officials confirm demolition began last week on what was left of the movie set—also the site of the Brooks and Dunn “My Maria” music video. The site has drawn tourists over the years and is listed on tourism websites.

“We have no set plans for what will be there. Maybe a campsite, something beneficial for the community,” said Interpretive Ranger Amber Harrison.

The park began demolition last year with the removal of the church building. Officials said then flooding had caused the buildings to deteriorate.

Some members of the community asked it to be saved.

“What a God awful tragedy. It’s good for tourism. People stop there all the time,” said Executive Director of the Big Bend Film Commission John Green. “It’s a shame we lost an icon on the river road.”

The Contrabando movie set is located along FM-170 West of Presidio.
